VENICE
Venice, the city and its canals
The city is built on 118 small islands, linked by 150 canals and around 400 bridges and pavements. It seems to float on the waters of the lagoon, composing a unique and enchanting landscape. It is an unusal archaeological site which still breathes. The lagoon of Venice has one of the highest concentrations of masterpieces in the world and the mysterious, romantic atmosphere of the city makes the city truly special. Venice, the “Queen of the Seas” built on water with magnificent buildings, marble palaces and churches, symbolizes people’s victorious struggle against the elements as they managed to master a hostile nature.
“And when we leave Venice we find that our watches have trouble returning to real time again”
Venice, the history
Venice offers a “cultural landscape” that is the result of the action of the Greeks, Etruscans, Celts, Romans, Byzantines and Lombards. A millennial stratification of history, which can be perceived in every detail of the “lagoon city”. The city was historically the capital of the Republic of Venice for over a millennium. It was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades
Venice capital of the “Serenissima”, Maritime Republic. The city was a political and economic power, a major center of art, architecture, writing, music and theater. Venice has been a venue of studies and new fashions. And the city has been the protagnoist dramatic pieces and paintings. Home of Universities, Museums and masterpieces displayed in a year round open-air exhibition. Home to events that have been renewed for centuries – such as Carnival, the Redentore and the regatta –
and more recent international events, but with a remarkable history, such as the Biennale and the Film Festival.

Venice, a city to discover
Venice, legends and curiosities The first Cafè to be opened in Europe was in Venice – Caffè Floriàn – as well as the first tavern, the Osteria Do Spade, near the Rialto Bridge. Also the first casino in the world, called “Ridotto Grande”, opene din Venice. And still in this magical city, there is the largest existing canvas, the “Martyrdom and Glory of San Pantaleone” of over 400 square meters, painted by Gian Antonio Fumiani.
In Venice, you can also find the narrowest street: calle Varisco, just 53 cm wide. Legends and mysteries pervade every corner of Venice. From the hiding place of the Holy Grail to the ghost of Marco Polo’s bride, from the witch who wanted the soul of Tintoretto’s daughter to the mermaid who with a stroke of her tail created the first Venetian lace from the sea foam.
Venice, the flavours
Venetian recipes and culinary traditions are a great means to better understand the history and culture of the city.
The frittelle and galani are a must if you visit Venice during Carnival! Pastry shops compete to create the best, heavenly version of each recipe. And don’t miss the “fugassa” during Easter time and the “Fava dei morti” and “Dolce di San Martino“, decorated with colorful and tasty delicacies. The “Baicoli”, the “Zaeti”, the “Bussolà” and the “Pevarini”. The “Pan del Doge”, the “Mori”, the “Baci in Gondola”. As well as the “Sarde in saor”, the “Baccalà mantecato”, “Risi e bisi”, “Fegato alla veneziana”, the “Carciofo violetto di Sant’Erasmo“, the “Polenta e schie”, “Seppie al nero”, “Granseola” and “Bigoli in salsa”.
And all kinds of “cicchetti” – the famous Venetian small snacks or side dishes with a good Aperol Spritz for aperitivo. And spices and wines.
Buon appetito!
